NAOMH CONAILL WILL GIVE Leon Thompson ‘until the very last minute’ to prove his fitness ahead of the Donegal SFC final against St Eunan’s.
Thompson was replaced by Johnny McLoone midway through the first half of Sunday’s 4-10 to 0-11 semi-final win over Kilcar in Ballybofey and appeared in some distress as he left Sean MacCumhaill Park.
“We’re not sure of the extent of Leon’s injury just yet,” Martin Regan, the Naomh Conaill manager, told Donegal Sport Hub.
“The dust hasn’t really settled from Sunday just yet. We’ll get him looked at in the next day or two. We haven’t got it assessed yet, but we’d be hopeful of having him.
“He’s a huge player for us and a real go-to man. He’ll have until the very last minute to prove his fitness. He’s been excellent all year for us in the Championship.”
Brendan McDyre is continuing his rehabilitation from the knee ligament injury sustained in their 2-12 to 0-8 group phase win over St Eunan’s in Letterkenny.
McDyre was togged out and among the substitutes for the weekend’s win against Kilcar.
“He’s getting there and is back doing jogging,” Regan said.
Marty Boyle and Cathal Ellis are the others carrying knocks at present, but Regan expects both to be fighting fit for the October 18th final.
Bar the hamstrung Darragh Mulgrew, St Eunan’s manager Maxi Curran is shuffling a full deck of cards.
Mulgrew was forced off in the opening ten minutes of St Eunan’s quarter-final win over Glenswilly and is in a real race against time to make it in time for the final.
Curran has described Mulgrew’s hamstring tear as ‘fairly significant’
“It’s a big blow because, if you go back through big games in the last two years, he has done some massive man-marking jobs,” Curran said of the Donegal Under-21 player.
“He dealt with Karl Lacey last year in the quarter-final, he dealt with Martin McElhinney in the semi-final and he dealt with Ciaran Bonner in the final.
“For the Donegal Under-21s this year, he went out on Cathal McShane of Tyrone in the second half and marked him out of the game.
“Darragh can play anywhere from 2-12 on the field and there aren’t many players of that ilk around.”
