DONEGAL MIGHT HAVE LOST each of their opening Allianz Hurling League Division 2B games, but Lee Henderson isn’t worried.
A 2-14 to 1-8 loss against Armagh on Sunday followed a 1-14 to 0-13 defeat in Mayo seven days previously, but Donegal have been operating without a number of front-line players so far.
Danny Cullen, Jamesie Donnelly, Enda McDermott and Justin McGhee have yet to play, while Kevin Campbell sat out Sunday’s game in O’Donnell Park owing to an injury.
“There are a lot of young lads who’ve come in and they’re doing well with the step up, but those men we’re misisng are massive losses,” said scorer-in-chief Henderson.
A goal from Paddy Hannigan in the first half briefly had Donegal in the lead, but Conor Corvan goaled immediately at the other end for Armagh and Donegal couldn’t wrestle control back again.
Henderson said: “We were very good in the first half. We got stuck into them well. Things just didn’t go our way. We found it hard to get the ball inside. They were closing us down and working so hard.
“It was disappointing not to capitalise on the goal. We conceded right away and it was a big blow to us. We should have shored up after the goal. These things happen and we’ll learn from the mistakes for the next day.
“We were happy enough at half-time. The work rate and everything was first class, but we didn’t take as many chances as we should’ve.”
Donegal survived in Division 2B last year after defeating Tyrone in a relegation-promotion play-off that went to a replay.
Ardal McDermott’s men are away to Meath on Sunday-week.
