Lagan Harps, Raphoe Town and Swilly Rovers claimed wins last night in the Terry Leyden Under-14 Donegal Women’s League games:
Finn Valley 0 Lagan Harps 6
Finn Valley WFC Â welcomed Lagan Harps to the Valley Centre for their second fixtue of the season.
Both teams coming off the back of opening day victories appeared to set up an interesting fixture.
Valley started off sluggish and Lagan showed with intent that they ment business with some early pressure and were soon rewarded with a corner to which Shannon Cunningham converted.
Valley never seemed to get off the starting blocks and were soon to find themselves further behind after Jessica Lease powered her way past the Valley defence to score.
Valley hadn’t long to wait until they had to seccumb to the powerful Lease who beat the offside trap to put Lagan further ahead. Valley  began to defend deeper and  were camped in their own half and with some stern defending were holding off the Lagan pressure but were undone once again with a fine goal by Rhianna Devenney whose thunderous effort  floated into the top right corner.
With minutes left before the break Lagan were to extend their lead as Lease capitalised on a mistake in the Valley defence to secure her hatrick.
A vast improvement in the second half by the Valley girls soon had Lgan on the back foot  and it was their turn to endure the heaped pressure.
Encouraged by their second half  play Valley continued to seek the goal that might ignite a comeback but Lagan were able to hold out and reduce Valley to long range efforts with the pacey Gabrielle O’Donnell posing a threat from long clearances by the Lagan defence but it was Erin Doherty whose cross come shot was misjudged by the Valley keeper only to have to take it out of the goal once more.
This extended scoreline certainly didn’t deter Valley from getting a hard earned consolation for all the determination and character in the second half but it wasn’t to be.
Raphoe Town 2 Mulroy 0
Raphoe Town made it a winning start in the U14 league on Wednesday night but they were made to scrap all the way for the points by a hard-working Mulroy side who had just returned from winning a tournament in Kilkenny where they.
A torrential shower at kick-off made it a miserable and cold night, but both teams served up some super football and there were some fantastic duels on the night.
None had quite the impact on the game as the one between Mulroy’s goalkeeper Meabh Duffy and Raphoe’s excellent young forward Shania McMonagle, with the visiting keeper pulling off a string of super saves to deny the striker and keep her team in the game at vital times.
McMonagle had put Raphoe ahead in the 10th minute when she combined well with the lively Samara McBrearty before clipping the ball to the bottom corner.
However inspired by Iseult Nà Mhathuna who had a brilliant battle in midfield with Raphoe duo Allanah Kee and Julie Wilson, Mulroy worked their way back into the game and pressed for an equaliser.
Abbie McKnight in the Raphoe goal made a couple of excellent stops, and she was well protected throughout by Ellie McBride, Abbey Lee Bell, Ella McHugh and Hannah Maguire who were super in defence for Raphoe.
The home side managed to extend their lead in the 19th minute when Kacey Blackburn, Julie Wilson and Shania McMonagle were all involved in the build up, before Alannah Kee’s fierce shot found the back of the net despite gallant efforts from Duffy.
After that, it really was nip and tuck with Ellie Jamieson, Marie Sweeney, Aimee Connolly, Muireann O’Donnell, Enya McBride and Tammy Laird all working hard for the home side.
With the Mulroy defence in excellent form in the second half and the lively Jessica Coll and Emma Friel, Mulroy coming more and more into the game, the visitors could easily have gone away with a share of the spoils.
A series of late corners saw them scoop one glorious chance over the bar from close range, but in the end there was no way back and Raphoe held on to mark their return to the league with a win.
Bonagee United 1 Swilly 4
Swilly started the game well with Bonagee doing all the defensive work.
They did well to keep Swilly out, but a shot from Katelyn Hosford from outside the box on the right side found the bottom of the net after 10 minutes.
Bonagee grew into the game with Hannah Hopkins and Caitlin Hume doing well and they came close on a few occasions in the first half.
Kelsey McAteer got Swilly’s second goal of the half – a well worked goal.
Swilly kicked off the second half with Bonagee doing well and pressing the ball well.
Bonagee won a free kick which Caitlin Hume tucked away in near post after 15 minutes.
Bonagee were working hard to trying hard but swilly got a break down the right wing with a long ball up to Orlaith Connolly had a nice strike to take it into the bottom corner of the goal.
Anna McFadden got the fourth for swilly near the end took her goal well, was a very good game played in good spirits by both teams.
Well done Emma Dothery for Bonagee who made some brilliant saves, and for Swilly Orlaith Connolly played well.
