Kildrum extended their lead at the top of the Donegal Junior League to seven points after a nil all draw with Glenea.
Kildrum Tigers 0-0 Glenea United
Milford losing to Cappry means that despite only drawing the home side would have been happy to improve their lead at the top. On top of this they kept the unbeaten run alive in the league now going twelve matches without a loss.
In what was a fiercely contested battle between first and third, Glenea started the brightest early on. Ciaran McGeady and Lee O’Brien were looking lively for the visitors but they couldn’t manage to produce a clear cut chance.
Both teams defended well with neither side giving the opposition strikers much room to navigate. Sean Coll had an effort from distance go wide and Kildrum goalkeeper Shaun Friel made a few important punches clear from corners but the first half hour was largely played in the middle sector.
The game did come to light a bit in the minutes leading up to half-time. Joe Coll pulled off two fine saves for Glenea and Kevin McHugh fired a decent chance over the bar. Down the other end Ciaran McGeady looked destined to score but Kildrum got bodies back and his effort was blocked.
The second half continued in a similar vain to the first. There was a little more attacking flair from both sides though and Kevin McHugh forced Joe Coll into making a clever save early in the half.
A Ryan McFadden free kick ten minutes into the half caused panic for the Kildrum defence but they managed to react quicker than any Glenea player and cleared to safety. Oran Higgins was causing Glenea some danger from the left side of Kildrum’s attack with some tricky dribbling but Glenea defended strongly and didn’t give the young man too many opportunities.
The game did begin to stretch somewhat with around twenty minutes to go. Johnny McGinty made an important clearance after Ryan Tunahill tried to square the ball to Ciaran McGeady.
Kildrum created more opportunities too, Kevin McHugh curled just over from the edge of the box after cutting inside on his right foot. It was the ex-Finn Harps man who looked to have sealed the win for Kildrum.
He met a William Lynch cross from the left hand side and connected well with his header looping the ball over the head of Joe Coll but onto the crossbar. It would have probably been unfair on Glenea if they were to lose the game with a draw certainly being a fair result.
Glenea face Kilmacrennan at home next week while Kildrum travel to Drumoghill. Glenea lie eight points behind the leaders but they do have a game in hand.
