KILCAR’S second half resurgence ended the hopes of their rivals Killybegs in this year’s RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta SFC hopes in Fintra.
Killybegs 2-4 Kilcar 1-15
Killybegs had opened brightly but were second best after the break and having lost 1-11 to 0-12 against Termon in the first fixture in Group 4 in May, so have no chance of pulling themselves through.
A visit to Naomh Muire, who drew with Termon, awaits Mark Boyle’s team, while Kilcar have moved onto four points without any major complication.
A goal by Brendan McGuire after only six minutes gave the home side flirtatious notions but Michael Molloy’s team, who were without Patrick McBrearty, Eoin McHugh and Conor McShane, came through.
McGuire netted either side of two Michael Hegarty scores for the visitors. Kilcar did trail for most of the first half with Hugh McFadden, Gavin Boyle and Kevin Martin establishing a 1-3 to 0-4 Killybegs lead following a free from Stephen McBrearty and a point from Ciaran McGinley.
Kilcar, though, were to go in at half-time a point to the good, 1-4 to 1-3 when Mark McHugh netted right before the break.
At the start of the second half, Kilcar moved further ahead with eight successive points – McGinley, Stephen McBrearty, Mark Sweeney, Ryan McHugh, Mark McHugh, Aodhan McGinley, Andrew McClean and Hegarty all had white flags waving and a 1-12 to 1-3 lead.
Killybegs’ chances were further decreased with corner-back David Conwell was red-carded by match referee Ryan Walsh for an off the ball incident six minutes from time. Kilcar saw it out with McBrearty, Sweeney and Conor Doherty scoring.
In the dying embers Killybegs finally scored for the first time in the second half, though Daniel Breslin, before a late Eoghan Ban Gallagher goal.
