Kevin Cassidy came out of retirement last night as Gaoth Dobhair took the spoils by the narrowest of margins in a Division 1 League win over neighbours Dungloe at Rosses Park.
Dungloe 2-9Â Gaoth Dobhair 0-16
Dungloe led 2-6 to 0-10 at half-time through goals by Corey Gallagher and Ryan Greene after Gaoth Dobhair raced into a five-point lead.
Cassidy had announced his retirement from club football, but the former two-time All-Star came on here as a substitute for Peter McGee with around ten minutes to go.
Corey Gallagher opened the scoring of the game with a point, but a James O’Baoill free and a point from James Carroll had the visitors in front.
Two Ryan Green points (1f) swung the game in the home side’s favour but the next ten minutes belonged to the visitors – points from James Carroll 0-3 (1f), Noel Kelly 0-2 (1f) and Naoise O’Baoill had five between the sides.
On 20 minutes Ryan Greene pointed and this was quickly followed by a goal from midfielder Corey Gallagher, who weaved his way through the Gaoth Dobhair’s defence and blasted to the net.
From the kick out Ryan Greene took on the defence and made no mistake to fire past Christopher Sweeney in the visitors net to put the home side in front as the clock ticked down.
Ryan Connors and Noel McBride stretched the home sides lead further while Gaoth Dobhair had to watch their first goal chance of the game knocked out for a ’45 by full back Paul McGarvey.
Michael Mckelvey converted the 45 and a point by Niall Friel left the half time score Dungloe 2-6 Gaoth Dobhair 0-10.
Noel Kelly opened the scoring of the second half with a point to reduce the margin, the visitors second goal chance hit the post.
Conor Greene pointed and again Gaoth Dobhair had to settle for a point after what looked to be a goal chance smothered by the Dungloe back line.
A Michael McKelvey free and a free from James O’Baoill had the Gaoth Dobhair men in front again.
Two quick points from Corey Gallagher swung the game in the home side’s favour by the end of the third quarter but this was to end their scoring for the remainder of the game despite having the chances to level or even take the lead.
Points from Noel Kelly and Niall Friel ensured the visitors left Rosses park with 2 points.
