THE KELLY household at Carrickmore, St Johnston now possesses a unique trio of medals.
On Saturday afternoon at Morton Stadium in Santry, James Kelly won gold in the shot putt at the Tailteann Games.
James’s throw of 16.72 metres won him gold and confirmed his selection on the Irish Schools athletics team.
But it was a significant result for another reason.
[adrotate group=”60″]The Tailteann Games are an interprovincial schools event and James, a student at the Royal and Prior in Raphoe, was the third member of the Kelly family to return home with a gold in the shot putt.
Four years ago in 2012, John Kelly – now a student at Letterkenny Institute of Technology – won a Tailteann gold medal when he reached out to 16.23m.
Back in 1989, John Kelly senior scooped shot putt gold in the Tailteann Games and is now coach to his two sons.
John Kelly senior also set up a throwing group in the winter with Bosco Reid.
