KARL LACEY is winning his race to be fit for Donegal’s All-Ireland quarter-final against Mayo on Saturday.
The 2012 Footballer of the Year took part in last night’s training session at Sean MacCumhaill Park after a recent knee injury.
While the Four Masters defender didn’t train collectively with the rest of the panel, Lacey undertook what Donegal Sport Hub understands as ‘a strenuous amount of work’ on his own.
Lacey is said to be ‘very close’ to being declared fit, but Donegal manager Rory Gallagher will leave a final decision on whether to start the four-time All-Star until the morning of the game.
Lacey had to be withdrawn in the 40th minute of the 0-11 to 0-10 Ulster final defeat to Monaghan after sustaining a medial ligament injury that forced him to miss last weekend’s 3-12 to 0-11 qualifier win over Galway.
Eamon McGee took a full part in training last night and is expected to be given the task of man-marking the in-form Aidan O’Shea, who scored 3-4 in Mayo’s win over Sligo in last month’s Connacht final.
There will be no place in the matchday panel for Darach O’Connor, who has failed in his bid to shake off a knee injury.
