DONEGAL COMPETITORS had reason to cheer on Sunday in the Sligo Stages Rally.
After the eight stages of the event, Donegal Motor Club members left with some of the important prizes.
Laghey’s Gary McElhinney was co-driver for Paddy McVeigh, the overall winner in the Subaru WRC.
McVeigh and McElhinney were just 4.5 seconds clear of Damian Toner and Denver Rafferty in the Escort.
[adrotate group=”37″]Enda McCormack and Colin Fitzgerald were third, a further 25.5 seconds behind while Pat Kirk and John McElhinney were fourth in the Evo.
Michael Boyle and Dermot McCafferty won the junior event in the Civic, with a comfortable one minute 40.9 seconds to spare on Alan Moran and David Loughney.
Boyle is a son of former Irish Tarmac champion Declan Boyle and McCafferty is the son of local navigator John McCafferty, who recently did his 37th Donegal International Rally.
[adrotate group=”11″]Inver’s Johnny Jordan, with Paddy McCrudden on the notes in the Starlet, won class 11R.
Muff’s Darren Curran was co-driving the Civic of Brian Lavelle from Mayo who won class 1, while Ardara’s John Watters and Shane O’Donnell led the Escort to victory in class 14.
