THREE UP-AND-COMING young boxers from Donegal won Ulster Novice 9 Counties Championship finals last weekend at Rochesters BC in Derry.
Letterkenny ABC’s Connor Gordon (pictured above) was very impressive in his win over Dunree’s David Gallinagh in the Boy 3 final at 44kgs.
Gordon was on song from the first bell to take the honours on a unanimous decision from the judges and had caught the eye in a 3-0 win over Star’s Caolan McMahon in his semi.
Killian Durning took the verdict out of the judges’ hands. The Dunfanaghy ABC man stopped Rochesters’ Cody Leckey in the opening stanza of the Boy 2 39kgs final.
[adrotate group=”85″]Durning overcame Eamon Maughan in his semi-final, claiming the verdict on all the cards.
St Bridget’s, Clonmany’s Jamie McKinney earned a unanimous wiin against Jake Butler from All Saints in the Boy 2 44kgs final, having been equally comfortable in a win over Shea Tracey (Mark Heagney ABC) in his semi.
There was no joy for Oisin McDonagh of Finn Valley ABC as he lost out to home boxer DJ Dougherty of Rochesters in the Boy 2 42kgs decider, while Chloe McGonigle was pipped at the post by Maydown’s Makenzie Murray at Girl 2 44kgs.
[adrotate group=”53″]Finn Valley ABC’s Cian McDaid was just edged out by Kian Kelly from Maydown in the Boy 3 final at 36kgs while Twin Towns Gabriel Reed was stopped in the opening round by Eoghan Hollywood from St Monica’s in the Boy 3 31kgs final.
Raphoe’s Danny Buchannan and Dungloe’s Finn Nicholas lost Boy 3 finals at 48kgs and 54kgs to James McVicar (Castleblayney) and Darren Robinson (Errigal) respectively.
A number of Donegal boxers also won titles by way of walkover wins: Katie Mulhern (Bundoran, Girl 1 60kgs), Ethan McCaffery (Dungloe, Boy 1 75kgs), Tommy De Ward (Twin Towns, Boy 2 50kgs), Alec Harkin (Buncrana, Boy 3 39kgs) and Kira McMenamin (Twin Towns, Girl 3 52kgs).
