JOHN KELLY added 16 centimetres to the Ulster shot put record last night.
The Finn Valley AC man reached out to a new best of 18.17m while competing at the Sollentuna Grand Prix.
The event, at the Sollentunavallen arena, was held behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Kelly broke the 18m mark last month in Ystad and the St Johnston man wasted no time in improving that even further.
His 18.17m is a new Ulster, Donegal and Finn Valley AC record.
The throw is significant as it comes just under three weeks out from the National Senior Championships in Santry, with the shot put event to be held on August 30.
Italian Leonardo Fabbri won with a 21.57m attempt that was a personal best.
Marcus Thomsen, Norway’s European U23 champion, was second (20.34m) and Sweden’s Wictor Petersson, a European U23 bronze medalist, was third with a 19.69m throw.
