Newly-crowned Irish champion Sean Kelly led the way last night as a Donegal boxing team defeated a Tyrone selection at the Cookstown Boxing Club.
Kelly won the Irish Junior 2 48kgs title last Saturday with an impressive win over Martin C McDonagh at the National Stadium and the Dunfanaghy puncher was on the winning trail again last night.
Donegal won the inter-county tournament by eight bouts to two.
Kelly overcame Danny Duffy, taking a 4-1 verdict from the judges. The St Eunan’s College student is in red-hot form right now and again starred last night as the Donegal team – under the tutelage of county coach Dominic McCafferty – won in fine fashion.
Raphoe ABC’s Eoin McGarrell got back to winning ways last night. Six days after losing out to Stephen Doyle from Na Fianna in the Irish Junior 1 48kgs final, McGarrell was the unanimous winner in his meeting with Rory Killoran.
A big crowd turned up to Cookstown BC for the tournament, the attendance boosted by the fact it was on Good Friday.
Convoy’s Ryan Ward-Mulrine won a pulsating contest with Daniel McDonagh, while Letterkenny man Paddy McConigley edged Teo Alin 3-2, with St Bridget’s Clonmany duo Adam McDaid and Jamie McKinney won in impressive manner, as did Letterkenny’s Joe Harkin and Raphoe’s Danny Buchanan.
