It was an industrious opening weekend in the Intermediate Championship as Cloughaneely and Gaeil Fhánada collected maximum points from their two games.
Gaeil Fhánada 2-11 Downings 0-9
Gaeil Fhánada started their Intermediate business off in Group B to a winning start as they beat neighbours Downings by an eight-point margin on Saturday.
The locals were reduced to 14 men when Seamus Nanny Friel was red carded after 15 minutes.
Playing against a heavy breeze Gaeil Fhánada managed to go in at the break with 1-4 to 0-3 lead. A goal and a point for the locals and further points from Seimi Nanny Friel, Jimmy Coyle and Niall Carr put the locals in a fine position.
Downings had a disappointing first half to say the least with Lorcan Connor (2) and Gary Ban McClafferty scoring for the Rosguill side.
In the second half, Gaeil Fhánada continued to dominate for large periods, Michael Sweeney adding a second goal with four more points converted through Bernard McGettigan, Ephrim McFadden, Oisin Shiels and Brian McVeigh.
Downings reacted well to their first-half display – adding five points – but a black card for Lorcan Connor halted any Downings comeback, the game finished Gaeil Fhánada 2-11 Downings 0-9.
Buncrana 0-6 Cloughaneely 1-7
Buncrana had a strong breeze in their favour first half, but they failed to capitalise on it in a blustery Group C game.
Cloughaneely started the more spritely, with their first score being the game’s only goal.
However, the Buncrana lads kept working hard to break down the opposition’s defence and came in level at halftime; Buncrana 0-4 Cloughaneely 1-1.
With the wind at Clouyghaneely’s backs second half, they worked themselves into a nice lead.
However, with just five minutes left on the clock and only two points up, Cloughaneely were reduced to 14 men after a deliberate foul on Caolan McGonagle.
Struggling against the wind, Buncrana failed to make it work to their advantage and Cloughaneely saw the game through to the end.
