JOHNNY DUNLEAVY suffered a broken cheekbone whilst in action for Cork City on the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on Friday night.
The Ballybofey native was involved in a clash of heads with Limerick FC’s Paudie O’Connor and had to replaced on 18 minutes. It marks the continuation of a frustrating season for the 24-year-old, who was forced to go undergo knee surgery on a cartilage tear in early May following Cork City’s 2-1 loss to Dundalk.
Cork were surprisingly defeated 3-2 at Turner’s Cross in the Munster derby. Vinny Faherty gave Limerick the lead before goals from Ross Gaynor and then John O’Flynn edged Cork in front.
However, O’Connor made it 2-2 before Ali Abass won it for the side managed by Martin Russell, who were without the suspended Killybegs native Shaun Kelly. The right-back recently rejoined the club from Derry City.
Meanwhile, at the Brandywell, Ramelton’s Barry McNamee and Mark Timlin from Buncrana were starters for Derry City in their 2-0 defeat to Dundalk. Peter Hutton’s side lost midfielder Conor McCormack to a straight red card on 25 minutes following a foul on Sean Gannon.
Derry’s assistant manager, former Finn Harps boss Paul Hegarty, was sent to the stands for his protestations as goals from Ciaran Kilduff and David McMillan sealed the win for Stephen Kenny’s team, who are now seven points ahead of second-placed Cork at the top of the table.
Ronan Curtis from St Johnston and Newtowncunningham native Seamus Sharkey came off the bench for Derry. The Brandywell outfit are fourth from bottom and seven points in front of table-croppers Limerick.
