COCKHILL YOUTHS continued their fine start to the new campaign with a 6-2 home win over Carrowmena to go top of the Strand Hotel First Division.
Here’s a full run-down of yesterday’s games:
Cockhill Youths 6 Carrowmena FC 2
IN THE 15th minute the home side broke the deadlock after Tommy Doherty fired a superb effort to the roof of the net from the edge of the area.
The visitors equalised on 25 minutes after Conor Lafferty pounced on a defensive error to drill low past Declan Caldwell.
Daniel Doherty restored the lead when he drove an unstopabble effort from thirty yards to the top corner. Michael Owen Doherty then scored with a neat finish after good work by Darragh McDermott just before the break.
Cockhill killed off any comeback thoughts on 57 minutes after good work by Keegan Hegarty saw him square the ball for Mo Doherty to slot home.
Doherty then completed his hat trick when he converted another cross from McDermott.
Carrowmena then reduced the deficit when Lafferty got his second of the game pouncing on a poor back pass to finish well past Caldwell.
The home side finished strong and in the final minute McDermott drilled home from a very tight angle 12 yards out.

QPS Reserves 0 Aileach Reserves 1
AILEACH claimed a well-deserved three points with a good win on a windy Sunday morning in Muff against a subdued Quigley’s Point Swifts side.
They started well and three times in the opening quarter Ruairi Bradley came close firing wide from ten yards before seeing a header saved by David Bell and finally lobbing over the bar when well placed.
The point replied and Joe Johnstone pounced on a loose pass to create space but he fired just wide before Reece Rutherford had an effort saved by David McGeady.
Before the break Aileach replied and when Conor McMacken released Bradley his low cross evaded all and the ball was cleared.
Aileach started the second period well and McMacken fired wide from 20 yards.
They broke the deadlock on 48 minutes when Paul Mchugh intercepted a defensive pass and squared for Bradley to slot home from six yards.
On 64 minutes, Aileach defender Adam Barr lifted a high cross in to the Point box from deep on the left, but midfielder Jordan McGeady, who had a good game, blasted over from six yards.
Quigley’s Point were presented with their best chance of the game on 69 minutes. Defender Declan Bown, a bright spark going forward, made a great run down the right hand side. He drilled a low cross to striker Josh McLaughlin who perhaps should have scored, but his scuffed shot from six yards was cleared off the line by David McGeady.
The resulting Quigley’s Point corner was cleared by Aileach, who drove up field and Jordan McGeady was unlucky not to double his side’s lead when his shot from 16 yards went inches wide.
Aileach continued to press and were again unlucky not to score on 71 minutes.
A corner from Ruairi Bradley caused confusion in the Quigley’s Point penalty box before landing to Aileach defender Anthony Rabbitte, whose lobbed shot was well cleared off the line by Swifts’s Aaron Barr.
Aileach had two more chances to secure the game.
With seven minutes left, Caomhin McFeely headed straight at David Bell from eight yards after a good ball in from the left from Conor McMacken.
Two minutes later, another quality corner from Bradley was well met by the head of Adam Barr, who put it just over the bar.
With three minutes left, the Swifts almost snatched a point from the game. Paul Hegarty lumped a high cross from the left hand side into the Aileach box from a cleared free-kick, and Declan Bown’s header forced David McGeady into a good low save.

Clonmany Reserves 1 Moville Celtic 1
PLAYED in a strong breeze Moville took an eighth-minute lead when Billy McCann took advantage of a weak back pass to attack the Clonmany goals and chipped the advancing Liam McGonigle to put Moville one up.
Moville continued to press Clonmany taking advantage of the wind at their back and Conor Doherty went close twice within the space of four minutes.
First he drove a low shot across the face of the goals in the 31St minute and then again in the 35th minute when he got on the end of Billy McCann cross but saw his goal bound header tipped over the bar by Liam McGonigle.
Clonmany saw out the half without conceding another goal but had a close shave on the cusp of half time when Gareth Foyne’s cross was headed narrowly wide by Charlie Gill.
On the restart, Billy McCann went on a strong run down the left wing and his cross to the back post was volleyed by McNutt but it came back off the post.
Clonmany began to get on top and using the prevailing wind forced the pace of the rest of the half with their equaliser coming in the 70th minute after good work by Ryan Doherty and Oisin Hession set up Michael Harkin for a shot from twenty yards out which flew into the top corner giving Liam Grimley no chance.
Clonmany continued to press and almost snatched a late winner when Dessie Doherty crossed from the left edge of the box but Oisin Hession could not direct his downward header on target and the match ended in stalemate.

Illies Celtic 1 Rasheney FC 0
DESPOTE playing with the wind in the opening period Rasheney failed to take advantage and rarely troubled Johnathan Noone in the home goal.
Indeed Illies threatened first when Paddy Doherty fed John Pio Donaghey but he drove wide from a good position. Rasheney responded and David McLaughlin found space but fired narrowly over from 20 yards.
Before the break the home side made the break through when Dominic Doherty despatched a twenty yards free low to the corner past Damien Friel.
Illies started the second half well and Paddy and Stephen Doherty and JP Donaghey were all off target with efforts.
A Martin Coyle cross then found Paddy Doherty whose header was brilliantly saved by Sean Friel who took over in goal at half time.
Rasheny finished strongly and Charlie Doherty had a dipping effort from twenty yards tipped over by Noone before in the final minute Noone was at full stretch to turn a Damien Friel effort around the post.

PLAYED on Wednesday night in Maginn Park, Redcastle started well and had a number of chances but were unable to make them count.
Harry McQuillian and Brendan Murphy had the best of the Redcastle opportunities, McQuillian fired over under pressure from the Sea Rovers keeper while Murphy saw his shot blocked by the keeper’s legs.
Rovers’ best chance of the half came from an inswinging corner that was headed wide by Damian Ward.
Redcastle appealed for a penalty as half time approached when Sean Curran was bundled over but play was waived on.
Sea Rovers began the second half with a strong wind at their backs and they made this count 10 minutes in when Pauric Doherty fired a shot past McCole from 35 yards.
Redcastle pushed forward after this setback and Murphy saw a shot strike the base of the post and back into the keeper’s arm.
As the half progressed Curran saw an effort cleared away while Joe McCauley was unable to find the target as his shot cleared the bar.
Rovers defended with purpose and eventually sealed the points when Ward received the ball from a corner and drilled home high to the net from 25 yards.
