The Fr O’Gara Cup took centre stage in Inishowen on Sunday – here’s a full round-up of the games and goals:
Hannon Greene Insurances Fr O’Gara Cup
Aileach Reserves 5 Greencastle Reserves 0
HE first half was an even hard fought affair with neither goalkeeper troubled.
Midway through the half the home side had a half chance but Sean McHugh fired wide from twenty yards.
Greencastle had a similar chance before the interval when Matthew Harrison advanced from midfield but fired just wide.
The home side broke the deadlock on 50 minutes when Neil McElhinney poked home from close range after a scramble.
They doubled their lead when good work by Paul McHugh saw him square the ball for Jordan McGeady to slot home from ten yards.
McElhinney got his second of the game when he headed home a Paul McHugh corner from ten yards to the bottom corner.
Greencastle replied and Harrison unleashed an effort from inside the area but Paddy Morrison got down well to smother.
McGeady got his second of the game on 81 minutes when he fired a free kick to the top corner and the same player completed his hat trick when he beat two defenders and slotted low to the corner from twelve yards.
Sea Rovers 2 Carrowmena FC 1
THIS was a superb result for Rovers against First Division opposition and in a tight game they had the majority of the chances.
In a scoreless first half Rovers James McCloskey fired wide before a Graham Morgan header was saved on the line by Kyle Dougal.
Their best chance came on 33 minutes when Morgan released Keelan Doherty in a one on one but he lacked composure and fired wide.
The trend continued in the second period with Damien Ward seeing an effort well saved by Dougal before Morgan was also denied by Dougal.
On 73 minutes Shay Rodgers released Keelan Doherty who rounded Dougal but saw his effort cleared off the line by Ruairi Dougal.
Carrowmena finally responded and in a goalmouth scramble both Conor Doherty and Dougal had efforts cleared off the line in succession.
Rovers broke the deadlock on 79 minutes when Ward’s free crashed off the bar for Keelan Doherty to slot home.
Carrowmena were stung into action and pressed forward and were rewarded with a late equaliser when Conor Doherty broke through the home defence to slot past Glen Watson.
In extra time there were no chances in the opening period but on 101 minutes Rodgers fired over from close in.
Rovers struck for what was to be the winner on 108 minutes when Damien Ward fired a brilliant twenty five yards free to the top corner.
The home side had another late chance when McCloskey released Morgan but he fired over.
Illies Reserves 3 Clonmany Reserves 3 ( Clonmany win 5-4 penalties)
CLONMANY started this game the better and went one up on 16 minutes when a Martin Doherty free kick came off the head of a defender on its way to the net.
They made it two nil on 23 minutes when another free kick from Doherty was powerfully headed home by Andrew Doherty from twelve yards.
Illies got back into the game on 32 minutes when a deep corner from Stephen McGonigle was hammered home from twelve yards by Martin Donaghey.
They almost grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of half time when a Joe McDaid cross found Gavin Doherty but he headed over.
Illies got back on terms on 54 minutes when Donaghey headed home a McGonigle corner to the top corner. At the other end Clonmany’s Aiden Friel broke clear and fired past Graham Doherty but the ball rebounded off the post and into Doherty’s arms.
Illies then had a chance when Stephen Doherty advanced on the left but his effort from the edge of the area was well saved by Liam McGonigle.
Minutes later McGonigle made another fine stop tipping a Martin Donaghey free over the bar. Clonmany regained the lead on 75 minutes after Friel broke through the home defence and fired low past Doherty.
Illies forced extra time on 89 minutes when Joe McDaid fed Martin Donaghey to fire low to the corner from twelve yards and complete his hat trick.
Neither side had a clear chance in extra time and in the shootout Clonmany advanced five four on penalties after a very entertaining game.
Aileach Youths 1 Carn FC 4
FIRST Division leaders Carn went through against reserve division Aileach Youths but not without a scare.
Aileach started the game on the front foot and almost took the lead in the opening minute when Derek Gallagher took advantage of a mishit back pass but JJ Doherty in the Carn goal blocked his shot as he tried to poke the ball past him.
Gallagher came close again on 15 minutes when Matthew Doherty beat his man and crossed to the back post where Gallagher lurked and although his shot was accurate enough it didn’t sufficent power to cross the line and Doherty cleared with his foot.
On the half hour Aileach came close again when Matthew Doherty pulled the ball back from the byline to Benny Hegarty on the penalty spot and his shot was superbly saved by JJ Doherty who was going the wrong way but managed to readjust his body to keep the shot out.
Aileach deservingly took the lead five minutes before the break when the impressive Matthew Doherty cut inside from the left wing and fired a unstoppable shot from twenty five yards into the roof of the net.
Carn almost equalised against the run of play on the stroke of half time when Brandon Browne took advantage of a defensive slip up to lob Dylan Clarke in the home goal but the ball landed just over the bar.
Into the second half and Carn started with much more purpose and the pressure told ten minutes into the second half when Browne crossed from theleft to the edge of the box and Cathal Doherty scored a fantastic volley into the bottom corner to give Clarke no chance.
Ten minutes later Carn scored two quick fire goals that ended the game as a contest.
Firstly Cathal Doyle made a run into the left hand side of the box and when Browne found him, he fired high into the net at the near post.
The third followed when Cathal Doherty crossed from the right and Rory Brady slipped in between the two centre halves to place his header into the bottom corner.
Aileach never gave up and had a couple of half chances when Matthew Doherty shot just over the bar and Callum Porter fired a cross along the six yard line that just eluded Dean Gallagher. Carn wrapped up the scoring in the final few minutes when Niall McGuinness was upended in the box and Browne slotted the penalty into the bottomcorner.
Rasheney Reserves 2 Gleneely Reserves 2 ( Gleneely win 5-4 on pens)
RASHENEY started this game well and on 18 minutes Conor O’Neill failed to hit the target when well placed.
They opened the scoring on 28 minutes after Alan Doherty advanced past three defenders on the left and from an acute angle fired low past a startled Mark Lafferty.
Paul McConalogue flicked on then for Kyle Doherty but again well placed he blazed over.
Gleneely responded and within a ten minute spell Cory O’Brien fired over from distance before having another effort cleared off the line by Eamon Reidy and then Neil G Duffy had a free well saved by Declan Grant.
Before the break the home side spurned a decent chance after John Doherty fed Kyle Doherty but he fired wide.
After a quiet opening to the second period began quietly but on 55 minutes Gleneely got back on terms when Enda Folan headed home a Neil G Duffy cross.
They were awarded a penalty but O’Brien blazed over the top from the spot.
The home side then had a spell when McConalogue drove wide before Kyle Doherty got on the end of an Alan Doherty cross but failed to Convert from a good position.
On 79 minutes Folan unleashed a powerful effort which Grant tipped around the post before the visitors took the leadon 80 minutes when the unmarked Duffy headed home O’Brien’s free at the back post.
Rasheney hit back within minutes and equalised after Alan Doherty’s delivery was headed home by Reidy at the back post.
The only chance of note in extra time came to the home side after an excellent run and cross by Alan Doherty found Ryan McDermott who miskicked with the goal at his mercy.
In the penalty shootout Gleneely emerged on top by five kicks to four.
Redcastle United 2 Dunree Reserves 0
DUNREE Reserves pushed their first division opponents all the way in this Fr O’Gara match but eventually lost out due to conceding a late goal in each half.
Redcastle started well with Greg Breslin crossing for Philip Margey who failed to connect well enough to direct the shot on target.
Brendan Murphy then had an effort wide before Gary Kelly had a header cleared off the line. Kevin Toner then curled in a shot that Dunree keeper James Gill tipped over.
Dunree’s first chance came via a free kick that was headed behind for a corner that was subsequently cleared by the home defence.
Dunree were out of luck again minutes later when a long range free by Jason Mc Laughlin evaded everyone and drifted wide.
Redcastle eventually got themselves ahead on the stroke of half time when Breslin fired home a sweetly struck effort from eighteen yards that clipped the underside of the bar on the way to the net.
Redcastle started the second half in positive fashion when Cathal Crumlish’s shot from Robert McLaughlins cross was parried by Gill, Redcastle put the ball back in and Breslin got a shot away forcing Mc Laughlin to head off the line.
Redcastle had another opportunity when a Toner corner saw Gary Kelly’s header
tipped onto the crossbar by Gill, with Crumlish heading the follow up wide.
Redcastle continued to press and passed up some good chances to increase their lead with Stephen Mc Laughlin side footing wide when well placed and Ryan Duffy denied by Gill. Redcastle made the game safe on 90 minutes when Margay’s shot diverted off Gary Kellys back to wrong foot Gill and book a last eight spot for the home side.
Dunree United 8 Moville Reserves 2
THE home side took the lead in the 10th minute when Liam Baldrick fired a twenty five yards free to the bottom corner past Finn McLaughlin.
The visitors equalised when a Michael McNaught effort was saved but he followed up to slot home.
On 17 minutes Moville stunned the home side when Johnny Radcliffe converted a penalty low past Philip Doherty who got a touch to the ball but it went in off the post.
Dunree levelled minutes later when Daniel McLaughlin headed home a Shaun Doherty corner.
McLaughlin restored the home side’s lead when he collected an Oisin O’Flaherty pass before drilling low to the corner from twenty yards.
On the half hour Darryl Moran fired a superb effort low to the corner from the edge of the area to make it four two.
On the stroke of half time Philip McGuinness had an effort which crashed off the bar. Dunree dominated the second half and went five two up when O’Flaherty headed home Mclaughlin’s cross.
McGuinness then made it six when he lobbed McLaughlin from close range. Moville responded and Philip Doherty made a fine save from a Kyle Harkin header before McNaught was upended in the area but Radcliffe’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by Doherty.
Dunree resumed on top and when Henry Connolly picked out McGuinness he side footed home from eight yards.
The scoring was completed when McLaughlin fed McGuinness who advanced and unleashed a powerful effort low to the corner and complete his hat trick.
