TYLER Toland and Glasgow City have reached the last 32 of the Women’s Champions League – after their latest penalty shoot-out success.
St Johnston woman Toland was introduced on 110 minutes, replacing Hayley Lauder, as Glasgow City defeated Valur 4-3 in a dramatic shoot-out.
Glasgow City and Valur played out a gripping one-all draw in Reykjavík.
It was Glasgow – with St Johnston woman Toland in tow – kept their cool in Iceland.
Leanne Crichton, Lauren Wade, Irish international Clare Shine and Zaneta Wyne all scored for Glasgow.
Mairead Fulton saw her penalty, Glasgow City’s second, saved at the second attempt having scored from her first kick – taken before the referee blew the whistle while Joe Love, the captain, was also denied.
Glasgow progressed after sudden death and will look forward to the last 32 draw.
Lauder played a big role in the Glasgow goal. After a scoreless first half, Scott Booth’s team broke the deadlock on 51 minutes.
Lauder’s free kick caused consternation in the Valur box and Leanne Crichton fired to the roof of the net.
However, Valur levelled on 79 minutes when a corner kick by Mist Edvarsstóttir caught out Lee Alexander, the Glasgow goalkeeper, at her near post.
Midfielder Toland has been progressing nicely in her new surroundings. Just four days after making her Champions League bow against Peamount, Toland scored her first Glasgow City goal in a 3-0 SWPL win over Motherwell.
Two weeks ago, Toland was introduced as a half-time substitute when Glasgow City defeated Peamount United on penalties at the Broadwood Stadium after a scoreless draw.
Toland was recently left out of the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team squad by Vera Pauw, but has stated her desire to get back into the international set-up.
