Neil McGee has indicated that he will be back playing with Donegal in 2019.
The full-back, who lines out for his club, Gaoth Dobhair, in this Sunday’s Donegal SFC final against Naomh Conaill, in Ballybofey, made a record 66th Championship appearance for Donegal in the Super 8 defeat to Tyrone in August.
McGee needs four more games to top Colm McFadden’s overall appearance record of 173 games for the county.
“I’ve been in regular contact with Declan (Bonner),” McGee said.
“I always said that if I can contribute and Declan feels I can, I’ll be back.
He made 51 consecutive Championship appearances over an 11-year period before a red card against Fermanagh in 2016 meant he missed a drawn semi-final with Monaghan.
McGee said: “I take great pride in it. I won’t be up there for a token gesture.
“I’ll know when that day comes. At the minute, the body’s okay. I had a few injuries and I just wasn’t totally satisfied.
“I had a good chat to Declan, I’ve said I’ll get the club over first. If we’re not just up there taking up a space in the dressing room.”
Bonner was the Gaoth Dobhair manager when they won the last of their 14 Donegal SFC crowns in 2006.
McGee said: “I always had a good relationship with Declan. He’s a great football man and I always had great respect for him.”
