BRENDAN O’Donnell of Lifford-Strabane AC won the Irish senior hammer title this afternoon.
O’Donnell threw a new personal best of 64.62m to land the gold.
“I was hoping to go over 60 and get into the medals if I was lucky,” a visibly shocked O’Donnell said.
“Shocked. Completely shocked.
“I was lucky during lockdown that we stuck a garage in the house last year. We didn’t get much use out of it until then.”
The new mark is a whopping four-metre personal best for O’Donnell.
He said: “I was actually targeting the Ulsters. I got into it when lockdown started.
“I wasn’t taking things too seriously before then. That was the excuse to get back – and Jesus it paid off.”
