The National Girls 1 to 6 Championships begin this Friday at the National Stadium and Donegal has ten boxers competing.
This weekend, Lani Lafferty (Twin Towns), Clodagh McGonigle (Carndonagh) and Cody Lafferty (Raphoe) get the ball rolling for the Donegal contingent.
Lafferty faced Tredagh’s Brianna Johnston at Girl 1 41kgs; McGonigle faces Saviours Crystal’s Katie Robinson in a Girl 3 53kgs contest; and Raphoe’s former Irish champion Cody Lafferty squares up to Chantelle Robinson of St Nicholas ABC in a Girl 5 48kgs bout.
On Friday-week, it will be the turn of Sarah Marie Duffy of Illies and Clonmany’s Amy Doherty.
Last weekend, Duffy won the Ulster Girl 1 39kgs title in style as she overcame Caoilfhionn Crowley at the Rochesters ABC in Derry.
Duffy was the 4-1 winner and she is now eyeing up a crack at Kilfenora’s Ellie Hanrahan next week, while Doherty faces competition from Cori Gleeson of Nenagh at Girl 1 55kgs
Dunree’s Brenda Collins, Molly Simmons from Carndonagh, Raphoe’s Leah Gallen, Clonmany puncher Grace Harkin and Twin Towns ABC woman Alecia McMenamin will all box in the Championships later in the month.
