IT’S ARGUABLY AS big a day in Donegal sport on an international stage as we’ve ever seen.
Sinead Jennings, Mark English and Chloe Magee are all in action at the Olympic Games in Rio, with massive importance on all three’s events.
English competes in the 800m heats, which get underway at 2:10pm Irish time. The UCD medical student is in the sixth of the seven heats. The top three in each heat qualify for the semi-finals, with the three fastest losers from the seven heats. His heat is expected to start at 2:55pm Irish time, but keep an eye on things.
Details of who English will take to the line with are here.

Around that same time, all eyes will be on Jennings, who takes part in the lightweight women’s double sculls final at the the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. The Letterkenny native will be joined by her partner Claire Lambe at 2:32pm Irish time. The pair qualified for the final courtesy of a third-placed finish in the semi-final yesterday afternoon.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, 1am, Magee will contest her second match in the ladies singles badminton. The Raphoe native went down today against world No 3 and second seed, Wang Yihan from China on a 21-7, 21-12 scoreline.
Twenty-seven-year-old Magee takes on Germany’s Karin Schnaase in Group J and will need to win to have any sort of outside chance of qualification.
