For the first time in a dozen years Portsalon played host to a Scratch Cup on Saturday, kindly sponsored and made possible by Conor McGettigan of McGettigan’s Applegreen, Lifford.
The weather was not in our corner, with misty rain hanging over the course throughout the day but it didn’t stop two brilliant battles for the Senior and Intermediate Scratch Cups, both going to the wire and one to extra-time.
In the Senior Scratch Cup, it was Ruairi O’Connor (Co Sligo) that emerged with victory following a playoff with Damian McCusker (Moyala) and Enda Kennedy (Rosapenna).
The three had a ding-dong battle throughout the second 18 holes and it was a super achievement for Ruairi to come out best in his first visit to Portsalon.
In the intermediate section the spoils went to locial man Donal Callaghan Jnr by the slenderest of margins (one stroke) after he crafted an excellent second round to burst from the pack.
Runner-up Mark Howard also shone brightly on the second 18 to edge out half-way leader Jack McGarrigle (Letterkenny) on a BOT for the runner-up spot.
The Captain Mick McGlynn congratulated all that played on Saturday for showing the mental strength to get through 36-holes in such testing conditions, while he also congratulated and thanked Conor McGettigan for laying on a super event, where some of the finest golfers in the North West came to play.
Next year we just need some sunshine!
