CAOIMHE HERRON STRUCK AN extra time winner for Glenree United in the Ulster Under-16 Cup final at Ballyare.
Glenree United 2-1 Lagan Harps (after extra time).
In a very exciting game, it took Glenree (pictured above) seven minutes to put the ball in the Lagan net.
Glenree won a throw on the left side and Hannah Shiels passed to the unmarked Lauren Carr whose shot gave Lagan ‘keeper Neve Scanlon no chance.
Play moved from end to end with Aine Dealsey coming close on 16 minutess from a Lagan corner.
Laura Dubera forced a fine save by Scanlon before Claire Friel denied Bronagh Gallagher at the other end after she’d been sent clear by Georgia Keys.
Lagan drew level when Ciana Brogan fired a penalty past Friel after Shannon Cunningham was upended in the box.
Lagan could have taken the lead with three minutes to go in the first half after Brogan played in Gallager but shot just wide.
The second half failed to throw up a winner and just three minutes into extra time Glenree conjured up a winner.
Thea Duffy crossed for Herron who shot home from 20 yards.
Lagan (pictured below) tried to equalise but there was no way past the excellent Niamh McDevitt and Siobhan Sweeney.
Best for Lagan were Aoife Page, Chantel Kelly and Georgia Keys, with Siobhan Sweeney, Hannah Shiels and Eimear Sweeney playing well for Glenree.
The player of the match award went to Niamh McDevitt, who was outstanding.
