Confirmation this evening that Rory Gallagher has stepped down as the Donegal senior manager set social media alight again.
Gallagher confirmed to his players that he had taken the decision to quit, after three years at the helm.
The 38-year-old Fermanagh native was a selector to Jim McGuinness for three years and in 2014 succeeded McGuinness in the top post.
Last year, Gallagher was given a new three-year term, with the option of a fourth, as he set about the task of rebuilding a squad that was decimated by retirements and withdrawals.
However, after disappointing and heavy defeats to Tyrone and Galway this summer, Gallagher has called time on his tenure.
This is disappointing Rome wasn't built in a day a manager needs time to get a team together especially a team of young lads https://t.co/TCHL9u0DOw

Absolutely no hard feelings with Rory. Donegal GAA will forever owe a lot to him and he should be proud. Time feels right for a change #gaa

Gallagher's grade score? B- or a C+. Legacy he inherited wasn't enriched. Donegal still in top 6 & blooded the new generation. #GAA

In fairness to Rory I'd have probably done the same. If half the county is giving out about you then why bother try to bring them success!!

Rory Gallagher the ninth inter-county football manager to step down so far. Kept Donegal standards high until this summer.

Rory Gallagher, who can replace him & do better? Many raw young players, too many stalwarts left & leaving now. It will take a big manager.
