MILFORD’S BRENDAN BOYCE gets his 50k Walk underway in Rio this afternoon.
At 12 noon, he will start his race with the local Traveller’s Inn in Milford, Boyce will be cheers on by his townspeople, friends and family.
The Letterkenny Athletic Club member came 29th on the day in London four years ago in the same event, a position that was subsequently upgraded to 26th following three disqualifications for doping.
Russia’s Sergey Kirdyapkin was first home four years ago, with compatriots Igor Yerokhin and Sergey Bakulin fifth and sixth.
In London, Boyce clocked three hours, 55 minutes and one second, which was his personal best at the time. His current best is 3:48:55, which was achieved in Dudince, Slovakia, at the European Race Walking Cup in March 2015.
[adrotate group=”38″]Boyce has been coached over the last four years by Rob Heffernan, the Cork native who was retrospectively awarded bronze in London and went onto win the World Championships in Moscow a year later.
