AVRIL McNamee’s World Handball Championship came to a heartbreaking end in Calgary.
The Sean MacCumhaills woman lost in the semi-finals of both the Women’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ singles in Canada.
In the ‘A’ semi-final, McNamee was beaten 21-12 21-5 by Mayo’s Clodagh McManamon.
That came after she had beaten Terry Bowman and Stefanie Weaver in her opening two games.
In the ‘B’ section, McNamee had beaten Mikaila Mitchell from Blue Springs in her first match, but she fell to an agonising semi-final loss against Kristina Rude at the Optimist Arena.
Rude, from Saint Paul, Minnesota, took the opening set 21-14 before McNamee won the next 21-19.
In the tie-breaker, it was Rude who prevailed 11-9.
“Missing out on a world final by only two points has left me feeling both disappointed and proud at the same time,” McNamee said.
“A lot of lessons have been learned and I’ve a lot of experience gained.”
