Roma McLaughlin didn’t manage to get in on the action on her 19th birthday, but the Greencastle woman saw the Republic of Ireland senior women’s team secure top spot in their Cyprus Cup group today.
Katie McCabe’s match winner earned the Girls in Green a 1-0 win over Wales, which means they top the pile and will have another game on Wednesday.
McLaughlin came on as a sub in a 2-0 win over Czech Republic and started in the 0-0 draw with Hungary.
Today, McCabe fired home in the 20th minute to continue Ireland’s unbeaten start under new Head Coach Colin Bell, who said: “It was another fantastic performance where the players have given everything for the cause and fought until the final seconds to get the win we deserved.
“It was a fantastic goal. A fantastic ball from Diane (Caldwell) to pick out Katie McCabe and it was a fantastic finish, a goal worthy of winning any game.
“In the second-half, we had to keep things tight so we brought Megan (Connolly) in who was able to drop in and give Karen (Duggan) more of a chance to drop back and defend the way she did.
“Wales are difficult opponents, a really good team but they didn’t have one real chance in the second-half which is testament to how well we played.
“We could have snatched a second at the end but I’m delighted for the team who are getting the rewards for their efforts.”
