After achieving their first win of the season last Sunday, Gweedore United will look to make it back to back wins when they host Glenree this weekend.
The Carrickboyle side had to be at their best to come from a goal down to beat Lagan Harps last week. Scoring three goals in the last 25 minutes to come away with a 3-1 victory.
19 year-old Jamie McGee captains the side and the youthful right back admits it has been a tough start to the season.
“We knew we were up against it with some of our better known players moving to other clubs locally in the area. The first half of the season was very disheartening, it was an uphill battle every week and it was hard to see a victory coming,” he said.
McGee who has been with the club from an early age felt that his side couldn’t buy a bit of luck before the Christmas break.
“We played well in some games but had no out and out striker that could put the ball in the back of the net for us. We worked hard against Deele last week to get that victory despite the conditions being atrocious.”
Much of what has halted Gweedore United this season has been due to not being able to field their strongest side. But things are looking much more positive in that regard for the second half of the season.
“There was a very different vibe around the dressing room last week as we knew we had a team out that could do a job against most teams in our division with the likes of Frank McGee, Paul Doogan and Ciaran McFadden playing. When the final whistle blew there was a massive sense of relief but we knew that it was deserved as every man gave 100%,” McGee said.
The return of Ciaran McFadden for the rest of the season is a particular boost to the side. McFadden had spent the first half with Glenea, but will be gladly welcomed back to Carrickboyle by his old teammates.
“Ciaran is a massive player for our Club, he has won everything there is to win in the Donegal League and that says it all about the man really. He’s a huge threat going forward and that is what we were lacking massively. It’s great to see when times are tough that lads such as Ciaran are coming back to help the club out. He got the first goal the last day and hopefully there are many more to come,” McGee said.
Despite not being in an ideal position at the minute, Gweedore know that there is a lot more football to be played and that the season is only beginning for them now.
“It is important that we go out now with a good attitude and try and keep the same squad every week and build on that. Our main aim now is to do as well as we can in the second half of the season and just see where it can take us. All we can do is take every game as it comes, it is a massive progression stage for most of our young lads and getting them ready for next season is one of the biggest things on our new Management team’s agenda,” McGee admitted.
New managers Paul McGee Maurice Ferry will be more than happy with the side that is now assembled. If the side were to get back to back wins it would be vital for the rest of their season.
“It would be a massive turning point in our season if we got two wins from two but we played Glenree this year away from home and they’re a very physical side that can also play good football on the deck. But our squad is also a good footballing side with the likes of Joe Duffy, Frank McGee, Paul Duggan, Ciaran McFadden and youngsters such as Steven McFadden and Roan Turk through the spine, there is no reason why we couldn’t go out in Carrickboyle on Sunday and get another 3 points,” the young full-back concluded.
