IN AUGUST 2012, Rory Gallagher from Kilcar and his Senegalese friend ‘Jimmy’ went to the beach in Lanzarote.
Donegal had just beaten Kerry in the All-Ireland quarter-final and using an adaption of an old hit named ‘Jimmy’s Selling Watches’ former Revs frontman Rory recorded ‘Jimmy’s Winning Matches’ in homage to Donegal manager Jim McGuinness and his team.
The song was coined for fun more than anything but it caught fire as Donegal went onto win the All-Ireland championship.
Gallagher, who now runs the Island Bar and Gallagher’s Beachview Sports Bar in Lanzarote, was with the victorious panel on their tour of the county with Sam Maguire.
Although ‘Jimmy’s Winning Matches’ and its various versions – the re-recording and iTunes – soared, this week the original download passed a million hits.
Here it is for old time’s sake …
