BOTH THIS YEAR’S RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta SFC finalists were defeated in the Brian McCormick Sports All-County Football League Division 1 this evening.
Naomh Conaill lost 2-12 to 2-6 at Glenswilly, despite leading by five points at 1-3 to 0-1 after John O’Malley netted an 18th minute penalty after Anthony Thompson was fouled.
Michael Canning’s Glenswilly were slow to get going but they finished the first half strongly with Michael Murphy (pictured above) bombing over two long range frees and Brian Farrelly also on target. Naomh Conaill were 1-4 to 0-5 in front at the break.
Glenswilly continued their upward curve at the start of the second half by scoring 2-1 by the 40th minute. Joe Gibbons and Neil Gallagher were the goalscorers, while Kealan McFadden added the point to make it 2-6 to 1-4 for the home team.
Naomh Conaill, who introduced Leo McLoone at half-time, rallied and got a goal back through Anthony Thompson midway through the half, but further points from Murphy, Gary McFadden and Cormac Callaghan sealed the win.
Meanwhile, perhaps with an eye on the SFC final in two weeks’ time, Maxi Curran played a very young side at O’Donnell Park with the likes of Rory Kavanagh, John Paul Clarke, Conall Dunne, John Haran and Kevin Rafferty all rested.
Kilcar were without Patrick McBrearty, who was at International Rules trials, but goaled three times in the first half for what resulted in a 3-12 to 1-10 win.
Patrick Gallagher, Stephen McBrearty – the scorer of 1-4 in all – and Kevin Campbell, who started at full-forward and not in goal, all netted past David Tyrell to make it 3-5 to 0-6 at half-time. Conal McGinley scored the hosts’ goal 14 minutes from time.
