Glenea United were the big winners in the FAI Junior Cup as the west Donegal men overcame Glengad United at Páirc Joe in the battle of the Donegal and Inishowen League champions. Here’s a round-up of the weekend’s FAI Junior Cup games…
Glenea United 5 Glengad United 3
The home side that came out on top in this clash of league champions and despite both sides being short some regulars it was a hard fought game. Glengad started brightly and Terence Doherty forced a couple of good saves from Joe Coll in the opening 10 minutes.
It was the home side who took the lead on 12 minutes when after being fouled in the box Ciaran McGeady converted the resultant penalty. Glengad pushed for an equaliser but were being kept at bay and on 28 minutes Glenea extended their lead when the away defence failed to deal with a free-kick and the ball broke to Ryan McFadden who drilled home from close range.
Glenea extended their lead on 40 minutes when Ciaran McGeady got onto a through ball and slotted the past the visiting keeper. In the second half Glenea continued to press and were rewarded on 50 minutes when Barry McGinley’s free-kick was touched home by Sean Coll. Glenea got their fifth goal on 54 minutes when Shaun McBride’s through ball released Ciaran McGeady and he struck a shot from the corner of the box into the top corner. Glengad tried hard get back into the game and were finally rewarded on 76 minutes when Terence Doherty got fee and he found the net. Glengad pulled two more goals back on 86 and 90 minutes through headers from Paul McLaughlin and Terence Doherty but the home side had done enough to claim victory and qualify for the next round.
Best for Glenea were Joe Coll, Barry McGinley and Ciaran McGeady while Terence Doherty was best for Glengad. Referee: Mick Langan.
Convoy Arsenal 6 Cavan Town 3
Cavan Town took an early lead in the 3rd minute when a long ball up the middle split the Convoy defence and Packie Sheridan lobbed the Convoy keeper.
Convoy settled into the game with Anthony Bogle coming close twice, the equalizer came on the 15th minute when Paddy Dolan scored a free kick from the edge of the area.
John Moore made it 2-1 for the home side in the 20th minute, Eunan Kelly extended the lead in the 25th minute and Anthony Bogle made it four for Convoy in the 36th minute leaving the score 4-1 at half time.
Both teams hit the crossbar in the second half and Cavan Town came back into the game with goals from Ciaran Harrison in the 81st minute and John Heffernan in the 85th minute leaving the game 4-3 with five minutes to play.
Convoy rallied and made sure of the win with goals from substitutes Callum Gordon in the 87th minute and Conor Rodgers from the penalty spot in the 89th minute.

Illies Celtic 3 Cappry Rovers 3 (Cappry win 6-5 on pens)
Illies took the lead on 10 minutes after Adrian Donaghey- Doherty and Dominic Coyle played a neat one-two for Coyle to drill low to the net.
Cappry equalised on 15 minutes after a good move ended with Callum McShane hammering past Johnathan Noone to the roof of the net from twelve yards.
Before the break Cappry took the lead when McShane beat the offside trap before racing clear and laying the ball off for Calvin Bradley to tap home.
They made it three-one minutes after the restart when McShane evaded three tackles and rounded Noone to drill home for a superb solo goal. Illies rallied and when Coyle released Donaghey – Doherty his cross was headed home by Puaric McDaid.
They equalised on 81minutes after Gavin Doherty broke on the left hand side and his driven cross deflected off a defender and into the net.
There were no clear cut chances in extra time for either side and it went to sudden death penalties with Cappry scraping through six five.
Carn FC 1 Kilmacrennan Celtic 2
Kevin McLaughlin’s side can really only blame themselves for this loss as they had numerous chances and missed a penalty and ultimately paid the price. In the opening period Dermot Doherty fired over and Gert Dzerins fired wide both when well placed.
Kilmacrennan responded and Kevin O Donnell fired a 25-yard free just over the bar.
Carn resumed control and Doherty again fired over the bar from fifteen yards before after another good move Darragh Browne shot wide from the penalty spot. Carn did break the deadlock on 49 minutes after a Ronan Doherty cross was brilliantly headed to the top corner by Aaron McCarron.
Within seven minutes the visitors levelled when O’Donnell’s cross was slotted home by the unmarked Gary Gorman. Midway through the half a Ronan Doherty cross found Matthew McLaughlin well placed but he headed wide.
Kilmacrennan then broke and took the lead on 69 minutes when a Jason Quinn free broke to Kevin O’Donnell and he rounded Kyle Dougal to slot home.
It was all Carn pressure afterwards with Ronan Doherty blazing a penalty way over the top after McCarron was upended. Then in the closing stages Dermot Doherty fired over and Brandon Browne fired wide when well placed.
Greencastle FC 5 Milford United 0
Greencastle dominated throughout and took the lead in the opening minute when Michael Henry fed Matthew Henry who slid the ball into the feet of Nigel McMonagle and he turned an slotted low past Damien Crossan.
Mark Henry then fired wide before Michael Henry and McMonagle both had efforts well saved by Crossan. Milford replied and when Jonah Serrinha broke on the right his dangerous cross was pinched clear by Dylan Doherty.
In a similar situation Doherty punched a Damien McLaughlin cross clear and when the home side broke Matthew Henry had an effort saved. Greencastle increased their lead then on 22 minutes when a quick free by keeper Doherty released McMonagle and he sidestepped keeper Crossan to drill home. Milford then suffered another blow when they were reduced to ten men.
Greencastle continued to press but their best effort was when Matthew Henry saw an effort crash off the bar. Milford then spurned a gilt edged opening when Darragh Greene was upended in the area but Adam Serrinha’s spot kick was well parried to his right by Doherty. I
n the second period Hegarty had an effort saved before Henry and Gill were off target with efforts.
Midway through the half Greencastle made it three nil when Michael Henry won possession and fed Matthew Henry who pulled the ball back for Hegarty to fire a crisp half volley to the net from fifteen yards. Minutes later Matthew Henry headed home a David Heuston cross.
Milford’s Terence Shields then forced a good save from Doherty before hooking another effort over the bar from close range.
The home side completed the scoring on 81 minutes when substitute Joe Doherty crossed for Matthew Henry who squared the ball to McMonagle and he controlled well and slotted home to complete his hat trick.
Castlefin Celtic 2 Drumkeen United 0
Castlefin advanced through to the next round of the FAI Junior Cup after a hard-fought victory over Drumkeen on Sunday in Park View. In a game of few chances it was the visitors who created the first chance when Michael Kennedy broke clear but his shot failed to hit the target. Castlefin found it difficult to make any clear-cut chances with Ronan Tourish going closest with a long-range effort.
The second half developed a similar pattern with very few chances in a real midfield battle. The game came to life in extra time, the home side took the lead in the 97th minute when Ronan Tourish went on a mazy run beating three defenders before playing through Barry Tourish who squared to Gary Mc Nulty who slotted home.
The visitors began to press and were caught on the break when Ronan Tourish broke clear and slotted home in the 108th minute. Referee: Liam McLaughlin. Best for Castlefin: Matthew O Rourke. Best for Drumkeen: Team performance
Whitestrand United 0 Rathmullan Celtic 3
Both teams had great support for this Cup tie. The first half had the high tempo of a derby match and was evenly contested. Whitestrand were missing a few regular players. Within 5 minutes Rathmullan’s Kevin Doran was one on one with the Keeper but Paddy Kelly saved very well. Rathmullan had chances on 10 and 14 minutes but pulled their shots wide.
On 16 minutes Eamonn Sheridan was one on one with the Whitestrand keeper and Paddy Kelly saved well again. Whitestrand now came into this game better and were pushing Rathmullan but could not find that opening. The second half started well for Rathmullan Celtic.
They eventually went ahead when Eamonn Sheridan’s shot over the keeper nestled in the net on 61 minutes. Rathmullan pushed for that crucial second goal with the two Sheridans linking up well. Eamonn scored his second goal from 10 yards to leave Rathmullan a cushion which was three only minutes later when Ryan Connolly scored. Referee: Patrick Martin.
