Yvonne Bonner will make her competitive debut for the Greater Western Sydney Giants on Sunday.
The Glenfin woman, recruited by the Giants in late 2018 following a trial, has joined the club of Mayo star Cora Staunton and has dipped her toes in the Australian Rules waters for the first time.
Ahead of Sunday’s AFLW round 1 meeting with the Brisbane Lions, the Giants Head Coach, Alan McConnell says he’s excited at the talents of Bonner.
“What she’s doing now is basically on sheer, raw naturally talent and ability,” McConnell says.
“It’s exciting to see what’s possible.
“She’s pretty exciting, unfortunately she’s only had about 12 training session in our game which is pretty astonishing.
“She came over pre-Christmas but unfortunately due to a bereavement in the family had to go home for three weeks so we missed a fair bit of the pre-season preparation with her.”
Bonner has signed a contract with Giants for the 2019 season, but the campaign will be completed in time to allow her return and be part of Donegal’s 2019 Championship bid.
Bonner is one of four debutants in the Giants’ list for Sunday’s game at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex.
Also included is the 19-year-old Haneen Zreika, who will become both the first Muslim and first person of Lebansese decent to play in the AFLW.
Bonner played in a challenge game against the Lions two weeks ago and turned in an impressive display.
