Gerard Gallagher wins Shane Bonner Memorial Cup at Donegal 5k – Full results here

GERARD Gallagher of Finn Valley AC was the overall winner at today’s Donegal 5k Road Race Championships.

The event was held in Letterkenny and Gallagher won in 15 minutes and 26 seconds to take the Shane Bonner Memorial Cup.

The Cup is in memory of the popular young Finn Valley AC athlete who tragically died in February 2011.

Eoin Hughes of Letterkenny AC was second in 15:29 with City of Derry Sparta’s John Paul Williamson third (15:31).

The top five was completed by Rosses AC duo Declan Ferry (15:48) and Charlie O’Donnell (15:49).

Ferry and O’Donnell led the way as Rosses AC took the team gold, joined on the scorers by Shane O’Donnell (16:26) and Mark Ward (16:30).

Maria McCambridge, of Dundrum South Dublin, was the first female home, crossing the line in 17:02 for 16th overall – just six seconds in front of Finn Valley AC’s Jennifer Elvin.

Finn Valley AC took the women’s team gold with Elvin, Teresa Doherty, Natasha Kelly and Catriona Devine scoring.

Author of 'Boxing In Donegal: A History (2021)' - the definitive history of the sport in County Donegal - and 'Relentless: A Race Through Time', the 2019 memoir of former Irish Athletics Team Manager Patsy McGonagle. From St Johnston and now based in Letterkenny, Chris was a nominee for NUJ Sports Journalist of the Year in 2010. Honoured by the Donegal Boxing Board in 2016 for his coverage on the sport.
