A DONEGAL soldier rounded off over 41 years of military service by winning the Michael Collins Cup at the Royal Curragh Golf Club in Kildare.
Private Gerard Friel won the Defence Forces competition earlier this month as one of his last acts before his retirement.
‘Ganch’ as he is affectionately known among his peers, scored 46 points to win the prize.
Earlier this week, Friel retired from HQ Coy 28th Infantry Battalion after over 41 years of service.
He was deployed in five overseas missions – once to Kosovo and four to Lenanon.
He is a member of Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club.
His former colleagues at Finner Camp have wished ‘Ganch’ well on his retirement.
