The opening months of 2017 have been good for Finn Valley AC’s John Kelly as he has begun to establish himself as the top shot putter on the island.
In that period he has won the national senior title set an indoor pb of 17.49m which doubles as an Ulster and Donegal record.
He added the Irish University indoor title from his student base in LYIY and to round this early phase of the season up was on international duty in The Canaries today for the under-23 European throws and taking that opportunity he got out to 16.84m.
All of this adds up to a period right now in which to evaluate and come out again in May, June and nail European under-23 Q-mark of 17.50, which he is capable of doing and move on to the Holy Grail – the magic 18m.
He has prepared for years, dominated age group nationals, broke records, but now he in a man’s world and as he matures all of this is possible as he pursues his goals.
