THERE WAS ACTION aplenty in the Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure Donegal Senior and Intermediate Football Championships over the weekend.
Well done to last week’s winner, Aoife McColgan (pictured above) for her starring role in goal for Donegal in their Lidl Ladies NFL Division 2 final win over Westmeath at Parnell Park.
This week we’ve eight to choose from so take your pick and we’ll have winner for you on Friday.
So here’s your options:
1 Adam Neely (Dungloe)
TONY BOYLE saw his Dungloe side get off to a winning start in Group A, when they defeated Bundoran 2-11 to 0-7 at Rosses Park on Saturday. Central to that win was Adam Neely, who scored five points – including three from play – and also had a hand in the move that led to Conor Greene sealing in the win for the home side.
2 Brendan McNelis (Ardara)
ARDARA GOT off and running with an 0-8 to 0-6 home win over 2011 and 2013 county champions Glenswilly. With Conor Classon adding some power to the hosts’ midfield at Kentucky, another man who caused the away side trouble was Brendan McNelis, who also won a number of frees, claimed a lot of ball in the air and posted three points for Seamus Gallagher’s team.
3 Brendan McLaughlin (Malin)
WITH Glengad United playing for the Inishowen League Premier Division title, Malin were minus a few regulars for the visit of MacCumhaill’s on Sunday. However, Brendan McLaughlin scored 2-4 to give the side from Connolly Park a fine win 2-9 to 1-9 win. Both his goals came in the first half just two minutes apart with the second swept past Christopher Patton soccer-style.
4 Brian Gillespie (Naomh Muire)
NAOMH MUIRE came within a whisker of the last eight last season and this year, a fine 3-7 to 0-11 at Glenfin has certainly set them off on the right path. Three goals were ultimately pivotal in the win for the side managed by Eamon O’Boyle, but so too was the form of Brian Gillespie at full-back. The tough-tackling defender led by example for the Lower Rosses side.
5 Kevin Cassidy (Gaoth Dohair)
AS THE FORM team in Division 1, Gaoth Dobhair brought that into their Group D fixture against Termon in Magheragallon, in a 2-12 to 1-9 win. There’s plenty of younger faces making an impact at Magheragallon this term but on Sunday it was one of the most experienced players that stood out. Kevin Cassidy led by example and scored three points, as well as almost adding a goal.
6 Ryan Langan (St Michael’s)
ST MICHAEL’S are a side that have been knocking on the door in recent seasons, but took a little while to come to the boil on Saturday against Killybegs. Eventually the home side at the Bridge ran out 2-13 to 0-8 winners. Killybegs were right in the contest but eight minutes from time, Langan broke their resistance with a fine individual and helped the final scoreline look more comfortable than it might’ve seemed.
7 Conor O’Donnell (St Eunan’s)
IN A GAME that was on the knife-edge, St Eunan’s and Kilcar shared a 0-13 to 1-10 draw in Letterkenny. It was Kilcar who made the early running and Martin McHugh’s side went in front by four. However, St Eunan’s got to grips with Kilcar’s deep runners and in Conor O’Donnell had a player who marshalled the half-back line well, as well as linking the play well when joining the attack.
8 Cathal McGettigan (Milford)
MILFORD CRUISED to a very comfortable win over Carndonagh at Moyle View Park on Saturday night, winning 2-15 to 0-3 against the Inishowen side. Cathal McGettigan scored 1-8 in that landslide win, which made him the highest scorer over the course of the weekend. He’ll face stiffer tests no doubt, but it was still a fine haul in championship football.
