MAXI Curran, the Donegal ladies dream manager, was relieved to see his side grab a late, late winner in Waterford today.
Caroline Sharkey’s goal, just 12 minutes into the game, had Donegal in front, but Katie Murray’s goal, on 49 minutes, swung the pendulum and it seemed as if Donegal were set for a second successive defeat.
“It looked like it was going against us again,” Curran admitted.
“We felt it wasn’t going to be our day again, but the experienced players – Evelyn McGinley, Nicole McLaughlin, Emer Gallagher, Deirdre Foley – were huge for us when we needed to get the ball.
“We were unlucky to hit the crossbar before they got the goal too.”
Curran admitted that his players felt somewhat aggrieved at the Deise goal.
He said: “The way the last ten minutes went, we were so unfortunate to concede how we did. The referee blew the whistle, our player stopped and the ball went to the top corner. There was a sense that we were wronged.”
However, when Robert Emmets forward McCroary netted there was no time for Waterford to hit back.
Curran said: “It was very pleasing and we deserved a wee bit of luck. We didn’t get much last week. We didn’t get the rub of the green last week, but that’s swings and roundabouts.
“They have worked their socks off. They tried really hard today. We don’t have a lot of work done. If we had lost there, we would have been in a big battle, but this gives us a fighting chance now.”
