Brendan Boyce finished a brilliant fourth and just outside the medals at the European Race Walking Cup in Podebrady, Czech Republic this morning.
The Milford man was in the reckoning for a medal and was in third place at one stage in the concluding chapter of the race.
Boyce, though, was pipped to a podium place, in spite of a tremendous effort.
Boyce was competing for the first time since switching club recently. Having competed previously under the banner of Letterkenny AC, Boyce is now aligned to Finn Valley AC.
Boyce, an Olympian from 2012 and 2016 in London and Rio, finished fourth in 3 hours, 49 minutes and 49 seconds.
Ukraine’s Ivan Banzeruk won it in 3:48:15, with Ihor Hlavan, also from Ukraine, in second in 3:48:38 and Italian Michele Antonelli third in 3:49:07.
The result and the performance will certainly give Boyce a massive confidence injection.
Today’s race in the Czech Republic will provide a marker in preparation for August’s World Championships in London for the senior walkers.
