It took a break of tie to separate them, as both returned nett scores of 39 points, but Eunan McGlynn’s slightly better back-nine was just enough to give him the edge over Joe Blake and victory in Anne Cannon’s Captain’s Prize played on Friday at Letterkenny Golf Club.
A big turn-out of members were joined by sponsors, guests and a well supported 9 nine hole Ladies competition on what was a perfect day for golf on a course in pristine condition.
The ever- present breeze ensured a tricky test for the golfers which was reflected in the scoring as only four players out of over forty competing for the main prize scored better than their handicap with two 39 points and two scores of 37 points.
The Captain had done a brilliant job in preparation for her big day and over forty prizes were handed out for a combination of overall positions, sections, guests, longest drives and nearest the pins.
In her address before the presentation of prizes Anne thanked the many companies that had supported here, the greenskeeper and his staff at Letterkenny Golf Club for having the course so well prepared, also the Society’s officers and her family, many of whom were present , for their help and support during her year as captain which for her had been most enjoyable and a great privilege.
She also thanked 2017 Society Captain Vera Kearney for inviting her to be her vice-captain and looked forward to handing over the reigns to her own vice-captain Ciaran Williamson at the final outing of the year in October.
A notable performance on the day was that of the Society’s elder statesman Paddy Murray Senior who returned an excellent score of 36 points to finish 7th overall and also took the prize for closest to the pin at the difficult Par 3 8th hole, still competing as well as ever.
