MARK ENGLISH captains Team Ireland for this weekend’s European Team Championships.
English runs in the 800m on Sunday in Sandnes, Norway as Ireland complete in the First League, one below the Super League.
The three-time European medalist recently won his seventh Irish senior 800m title and the Letterkenny man is still looking to make the qualification time of 1:45.80 for next month’s World Athletics Championships in Doha.
English and Sarah Buggy are the team captains for the weekend’s events.
“The immediate aim is to get the time for Doha and I’ve three chances, maybe four, left to do,” said English recently.
“I’ve ran a second of a season’s best. I started off at 1;48, then 1:47 and 1:46. If I can keep that trend up, I’ll do it. I’m feeling good so hopefully I can get there now.”
Thomas Barr, John Travers, Fionnuala McCormack are among the others, alongside English, who will be looked to this weekend.
The European Athletics Team Championships comprises one single competition where men’s and women’s teams represent as a single team the respective European Athletics Member Federation.

The team having the highest aggregate number of points shall be the winner of the European Athletics Team Championships First League Sandnes 2019 and will be promoted to the Super League for the next edition. The last four ranked teams will be relegated to the Second League for the next edition.
