THERE WERE EMOTIONAL scenes last night at Finn Park as Finn Harps and Derry City paid tribute to Mark Farren.
The former Harps and Derry player died in February, aged 33, after a long battle with a brain tumor.
Farren is Derry City’s record goalscorer having netted 113 goals for the Candystripes.
Although he played only once for Harps – against Longford Town as a substitute – Farren is fondly remembered at the club.
Derry have retired the number 18 shirt worn by Farren and the new stand at Brandywell Stadium is to be named ‘The Mark Farren Stand’.
Many Derry supporters wore t-shirts in memory of Farren at last night’s derby game in Ballybofey.
Farren’s widow, Terri Louise, was a guest of honour last night and was on the pitch for a minute’s applause which preceded the game.
In an emotional message on Facebook, Terri Louise said:
Tags:“A big THANK YOU to all at Finn Harps tonight from the staff, players and fans for inviting me up to be guest of honour and presenting me with a lovely framed picture of Mark Farren, it was such a lovely thought from you all, what he wouldn’t have done to be out there tonight.
“The generosity that’s Harps had shown Mark in his time here between playing and coming to the last number of games was lovely to see and most importantly Kevin mc Hugh for being a true friend to Mark over the years. I appreciate all you have ever done for him and for my treasured gift tonight, so thank you all. Great result for the team tonight too, well done.”
