EIGHT club GAA matches in Donegal have been called off this weekend.
After a raft of postponements last weekend, the Donegal Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) have now decided to defer the League promotion and relegation play-offs until after the conclusion of the championships.
The secretary of the CCC, Ed Byrne, admits that the futures body is concerned at the rising number of Covid-19 cases among young people and the potential impact on games.
“We have seen a rise in the community, even in the numbers going for tests,” he said.
“We don’t want to be in a position where spectators are taking away from games.”
The outstanding 2020 SFC final between Naomh Conaill and Kilcar as well as the IFC relegation play-off involving Naomh Ultan and Naomh Colmcille have yet to be played – but have been provisionally fixed for the last weekend in August.
One team in Division 3 of the League is already three games behind schedule and Byrne says that the priority for now is the 2020 games.
He said the CCC will do ‘whatever needs to be’ to ensure the 2020 final is played.
