AS THE IRISH VOLUNTEERS were in the process of launching the Easter Rising on Easter Monday in 1916, members of the Rossnowlagh Golf Club remained oblivious to the goings on in the capital.
The ‘Easter Monday Competition’ went ahead at Rossnowlagh just as the Irish Volunteers, led by Padraig Pearse, were seizing locations in Dublin.
The competition went as follows: “A mixed foursomes (under handicap) and a bogey competition took place over the Rossnowlagh Course, resulting as follows:
“Mrs J Hunter (Sligo) and Mr Gash (Derry), first; Mrs Thompson (Ballyshannon) and Mr SW Woods (Rossnowlagh), Miss Bigger (Ballyshannon) and Mr Dash (Derry) and Miss Patterson (Rossnowlagh) and Mr Silvester (Enniskillen) tied for second place.
“As a result of a draw, the prizes in this case were awarded to Miss Patterson and Mr Silvester.
“Also competed – Mr J Hunter (Sligo) and Miss McCay (Cavan); Mr J Hunter (Manchester) and Miss Lawson (Stranorlar); Mr Neilson (Donegal) and Mrs SW Woods (Rossnowlagh); Mr Stuart (Donegal) and Mrs Gash (Derry); Mr J Noblock (Rossnowlagh) and Miss Spence (Milltown); Mr Armstrong (Donegal) and Miss Jennings (Rossnowlagh); Mr Hornsby (Dublin) and Miss Montgomery (Omagh); Mr SW Donegan (Rossnowlagh) and Mrs Silvester (Enniskillen); Mr Crowe (Sligo_ and Miss Fairbank (Sligo).”
