TODAY’S A DAY that Drumoghill striker Paddy ‘Pajo’ Rafferty won’t forget in a hurry – in fact he dreamed about it last night!
While Drumoghill are joint-top of the Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division, they would’ve been considered outsiders when Letterkenny Rovers rolled into the Moss this afternoon for the Knockalla Caravans Cup tie.
Rovers, under the management of Eamon McConigley, are in the quarter-finals of the FAI Intermediate Cup – where they are due to face Leinster Senior League side Killester in a fortnight – as well as being in second place in the Ulster Senior League.
The Leckview Park side hadn’t lost a game in four months and this afternoon’s cup tie seemed to be going to form when Rovers went 2-0 up inside the first nine minutes through goals from Steve Okakpo-Emeka and former Drumghill player Terence Shiels.
But the home side, managed by Michael Lynch, managed to pull one back before half-time and then made it 2-2 four minutes after the break with Rafferty scoring both.
Whilst celebrating the equaliser, Rafferty waved the corner-flag. Local photographer Stephen Doherty captured the image perfectly.
“I had a dream last night that I scored and waved the corner flag,” Rafferty told Donegal Sport Hub this evening. “That’s no lie!”
For his flag-waving, Rafferty was yellow carded by match referee John Coll.
Eight minutes from time, Rafferty struck for his hat-trick. On his way through, he picked up a dead leg but still managed to score.
And although his celebrations were briefly cut short at having to be replaced due to the injury, his three goals sealed a famous win for Drumoghill.
