THE DONEGAL WOMEN’S LEAGUES are up and running for the new season again – here are the latest reports from last week’s fixtures.
Donegal Sport Hub hopes to have reports from all games this season and clubs are asked to forward their reports to the League and they will be subsequently posted on the website.
U14 – Illistrin FC 0 Kilmacrennan Celtic 2
A VERY entertaining game was played in Ballyare on Wednesday evening between local neighbours Illistrin FC and Kilmacrennan Celtic.
The hosts started brightly and took an early lead when Aoife Kelly broke through on the left. She managed to send the ball goalwards past Orla Corry in the Illistrin goal despite the best efforts of Dervla McCloskey too.
The more physical Kilmacreenan dominated most of the opening twenty minutes with some fine saves from Orla Corry and some great defending from Megan McDaid and Ciara Doherty.
Ciara McGarvey was becoming more effective from midfield as the visitors tried to push for a second goal. Rebecca McGlinchey was always dangerous on the break for Illistrin and came close before halftime. Alisha Tobin had a good opening too but the Kilmacrennan defense stood firm.
In the second half the young Illistrin side grew in confidence and played some great football.
Kilmacrennan created a couple of half chances but to no avail. With ten minutes to go IIlistrin moved Orla Corry up front in search of an equaliser and Ilistrin looked more dangerous. However with five minutes to go they were caught on the break and Aoife Kelly showed great skill and speed as she drilled the ball to the back of the net.
The Illistrin girls never gave up and Maria Kealy had a super effort well saved by the Kilmacreenan keeper with time running out.
The visitors were very impressive on the night and were well represented by Sarah Kho, Eimear Doherty, and goalscorer Aoife Kelly.
For the home side Orla Corry, Megan McDaid, and Samantha McFadden impressed.
Under-16 Glenree United 0 Donegal Town 0
GLENREE welcomed Donegal Town to Glenree Park on Friday evening to play in the third round of the Donegal Women’s U16 League.
The home side had the wind at their backs in the first half enabling them with the majority of possession.
Julie Trearty had the best of the home side’s chances in the half, on both occasions the ball went narrowly passed the post. Donegal Town playmaker Jessica Lease was influential in orchestrating countered attacks on the wing but Thea Duffy and Niamh Carr done well to break up the attacks.
The second half was end to end with both teams having a go to create the opener but the defensive lines from both teams were not to be beat. Sarah Harkin controlled the backline for Donegal, and gave little space for Glenrees Laura Duggera to exploit. Amy Boyle-Carr broke free a couple of times in the second half for Donegal but Niamh McDevitt and Siobhan Sweeney were outstanding for the home side in defence, and dealt well with the attacks from the travelling side.
Both teams had a chances to take all three points late on, Suzanne White and Fiona Shovlin had two attempts saved by the Glenree Keeper Clare Friel. Glenree were unlucky also as two attempts narrowly missed the target with minutes to go.
It was a brilliant standard of football on show, credit to all players involved.
Best for Donegal were Sarah Harkin, Amy Boyle Carr and Jessica Lease. Team performance by Glenree

GWEEDORE Celtic (pictured) defeated Bonagee United on Friday night.
Amy Louise Devine put Gweedore ahead, but Bonagee equalised with a well taken goal from Claire Doherty.
As the game approached half-time, Gweedore went back in front with a goal from Lauren Ferry after a fine run from midfield.
Bonagee started the second half a player down, as a player sustained a knock to the head.
Gweedore made the advantage count and exerted a lot of pressure, with good runs from Caitlin McGee, Laura McFadden, Aislinn Coll and Lauren Ferry.
Bonagee fought on bravely, and never gave up, at times making the Gweedore defence of Emma McGee, Etain Ni Haiceid, Grainne Gallagher, Lorna Ferry, and later Hannah Gallagher, work hard.
Gweedore secured the win with a second goal from Amy Louise.
It was a good team performance from Gweedore with Molly McFadden working hard in midfield and Orla O’Donnell doing well on her debut in goals.
Best for Bonagee were Deana Patton and Roisin Martin.

A TIGHT game in the U16 league last Monday evening saw Swilly Rovers score two second half goals by Orla Connelly to gain all three points.

A good run by Molly Wheeler found Chloe Carr on edge of box but Casey Barrett got across to make the tackle.
A long range shot by Jenna McGroarty was well saved by Neve Scanlon.
The introduction at half time of Orla Connelly and Chloe Moore stretched the Lagan defence at times, the first goal came when Catherine Grier made a great run into the box, with Rachel McDaid pushing her wide. Grier pulled the ball back along the six-yard box for Connelly to tap into the net.
Lucy Canning and Orla McGrath great move down the right into Savannah Whoriskey, but her shot was just wide.
Orla Connolly scored her second when Mary B Gallagher past down the left to Chloe Moore who past to Connelly to hit a shot from 15 yards.
Rihanna Devenney could have got one back for Lagan only for Aisling Irwin to track back and make the tackle.
