Mulroy Academy and Finn Valley made it two wins from two in the Donegal Women’s League Arena 7 U16 League on Friday night while Kilmacrennan were also victorious.
Mulroy Academy 5 Lagan Harps 1
Mulroy Academy continue their winning ways with a win over Lagan Harps on Friday evening.
Mulroy’s first came after 8 minutes when Laura Dugera won the ball in the middle of the park and made an advancing run before passing out wide on right to Caoimhne Heron who crossed to Lauren McBride to finish from close range.
Lagan got more into the game and within 10 minutes all was level when a long ball from Holly Canning to Bronagh Gallagher who ran past two defenders before beating Claire Friel in the Mulroy net.
It was very even game for the rest of the first half until about five minutes to the half time whistle when Mulroy’s power and physical presents started to dominate the game and created two quick goals just before half time one by Caoimhne Heron and other by Keri Sweeney saw Mulroy go in at half time 3-1 to the good.
The second half saw Mulroy score a further two goals by Lauren McBride and Keri Sweeney. Good performances from young Lisa Dugera on the left for Mulroy and Clodagh Sweeney in the middle for Lagan.
Finn Valley 2 Swilly Rovers 1
Swilly Rovers were the visitors to Stranorlar for Finn Valley Girls’ second league game of the season and it was the home side that secured all three points in a keenly contested match.
The game ebbed and flowed throughout with no quarter given or taken with the girls showing great skill and effort all through.
Valley opened the first half with some neat play down the flanks by Danielle McGinley and Jodi Doherty Lafferty but it was Swilly who scored first with a fine finish from Kellyann Buchanan after seven minutes.
Valley continued on the offensive but couldn’t break down the resolute Swilly defence of Collette McLaughlin, Aisling Irwin, Katie Duffy and Enya Gallagher.
Dina Patton, Jemma Bradley and Ridhcheall Doherty in the Valley midfield created some fine chances for the forwards but Alannah McFadden in the Swilly goal made some great saves to deny the home side.
Swilly attacks were also nullified by stout defending from Anna McCauley and Sinead Harkin, ably assisted by wingbacks, Cora McLaughlin and Rachel Lawne. Valley keeper Caoimhe Brennan had little to do in the first half but was alert to anything that Swilly forwards Ellie Whorsikey and Chloe Kerr sent her way.
The second half began with Valley more determined to get the all-important equalizer but Swilly midfielders Mollie Wheeler, Danielle Hynd, Orlaith Connelly and Kellyann Buchanan battled well and gave very little away to their counterparts.
Caithlin O’Loughlin and Ellie White came into the game as the half wore on and eventually the home pressure paid off when Ridhcheall Doherty finished to make it level with 20 minutes to go.
Valley pressed on in search of a winner with efforts by Emma Conaghan, Ellie White and Ridhcheall Doherty going narrowly wide.
However with 14 minutes left some great combination play by Valley resulted in Danielle McGinley keeping a cool head when through on goal and placing the ball beyond the advancing McFadden to give the points to the Finn-siders.
Nicola Irwin and Beth McFadden came on and showed some neat touches for Swilly but Finn Valley held tight to claim the points.
Swilly Rovers were well served by Aisling Irwin and Katie Duffy in defence, with Danielle Hynd and Kellyann Buchanan very effective in midfield.
For Valley Anna McCauley had another fine game and looks a natural in that position. Jemma Bradley, Jodi Doherty Lafferty, Dina Patton and Cora McLaughlin also impressed for the home side.
