DONEGAL WILL RENEW acquaintances with Mayo in the North-West Under-21 Cup as Fermanagh fell agonisingly short in their outing with Sligo this evening.
Fermanagh needed a minimum of a 10-point victory in tonight’s rearranged fixture – following its’ postponement on Saturday – to pip Donegal to second place in the four-team group.
The Erne County ran in a 4-11 to 0-14 win at Bawnacre to miss out on that second spot by just a point over the course of the three games.
It means that Declan Bonner’s Donegal will take on Mayo in the Cup final on Saturday at the Sligo Centre of Excellence at Scardan (throw-in time to be confirmed), with Fermanagh and Sligo meeting again for the Shield.
On Saturday last in Letterkenny, Ciaran Thompson’s late point sealed a 1-9 to 1-8 win for Donegal over Mayo. Beforehand, Donegal had lost to Fermanagh 2-4 to 0-9 and defeated Sligo 2-7 to 0-9.
