Donegal Town Basketball Club finished their season with an awards night in the Bosco Center last Saturday night.
DTBC had a good turn out from most teams and parents. They club had a good season on and off the court with more people getting involved in the running of the Club.
Martina Ryan took over as Secretary and has made a huge difference already with her keen eye for detail which has been a fantastic help.
Awards nights are about the players but truth be told without Martina and Garry’s input this season we wouldn’t have had half the success on and off court so a big thank you from me the chairman and all who got to play ball this season.
And also to the hard working Carr family and David Sweeney.WE keep stressing the need for more help so hopefully somebody reading this will come along and lend a hand next season.
Our u12 Boys (Regional Champs) and U16 Girls (Super Cup and North West Cup Winners plus 5th at the Aiccs) were the standout teams in the club this season so congrats to them on their efforts and to the rest of the teams who also put in big seasons showing great signs of improvement which is all any club can ask for. So a big well done to all our players team managers and coaches.
Two of our Ladies players Ruta Belazentyte and Julianne Murphy added All Ireland Medals too as they lined out for the Regional Ladies team who made history in winning the Ladies Regional All Ireland Title at the end of the season. We had two coaches involved as well so well done to Bill Collins and Kevin Sinclair.
We held a very successful National School 3 v 3 Tournament on which we hope to expand to more schools in the area next season. We also held a great Easter Camp with Coach Mc Coy from Liby Dynamites. Our next Camp will be at Halloween.
We are running Womens 3 v 3 basketball in July and August so get the boots out and come along and get involved. We hope to do the same in a few other age groups that show up in good numbers over the summer.
Next season we will enter as many teams as we can and we’d love to see us produce teams at all the age groups again right up to senior Men and Ladies. So if your interested in playing basketball next winter get registered with your age group as soon as Registration becomes available. If we have enough players in each group along with a Coach and Team Manager and the players paid up we will enter the teams into the North West League.
As things stand we are probably entering the u14, u16 & u18 Girls and u14 Boys. Coaches need to be found for the rest of the teams so get busy and try and get people with Basketball experience involved or register your interest and we will get you a course to become a coach. One of the clubs founder members and stalwart over the last 30 odd years he has been an ever present coaching teams every year and Refereeing club games. the great Stephen Carty called time on his coaching career with the club.
We hope to see Stevie still help out at our u8s but from everyone he has been involved with here in the club we’d like to thank him very much for his wonderful contributions down the years.
