Mervyn O’Donnell’s men ended a 12-year wait for a senior county title yesterday as they beat Naomh Conaill in Ballybofey but for one Gaoth Dobhair man, the victory was worth more than most.
In the Spring, Daniel Gallagher put a tenner down on a 205/1 long-shot accumulator – the chances were fairly slim, to say the least.
His selection was as follows:
- Donegal to win Ulster 3/1
- Galway to win Connacht 2/1
- Kerry to win Munster 2/7
- Dublin to win the All-Ireland
- Gaoth Dobhair to win Donegal SFC 7/1
With Donegal sweeping to glory in Ulster, Galway following suit in Connacht, Kerry doing the business in Munster and Dublin being Dublin, the lump sum of €2,057 was resting on the heroes of Gallagher’s beloved Gaoth Dobhair.
As Naomh Conaill tried to maintain their impressive defensive structure, Gaoth Dobhair proved too strong through Mac Niallais and Kevin Cassidy, winning the game by seven points, final score0-17 to 1-7.
