THE Donegal Junior League has aborted plans to stage a 2020/21 season.
The ongoing Covid-19 restrictions have put paid to any notions of a re-start soon.
The League action came to an abrupt at the end of September when Donegal was placed under Level 3 restrictions.
There were still some Cup games for the 2019/20 season outstanding at that point.
This evening, the executive committee meet on Zoom to evaluate their position.
“Many avenues and scenarios were explored as to how the remainder of the window to have a season/competition might develop,” a statement said.
“With everyone in agreement and taking everything into consideration the decision, while regretted, was taken to abandon any thoughts of starting the 2020/2021 season.
“Instead clubs will now be given an opportunity, and plenty of time, to prepare for the 2021/2022 season which it is envisaged will commence along the lines of the normal season in previous years.”
It now seems that the 2021/22 season will begin as normal in August, although an earlier start in July could also come into view should Covid-19 restrictions allow it.
The League will liaise with clubs through a series of meetings, including the AGM, which has been provisionally set for May.
The statement added: “This was not an easy decision to take but we waited as long as what would be considered as practical and a call needed to be made.
“ So please stay safe everyone and we look forward to a bumper new season ahead which will be kicked-off with our 50th Anniversary celebrations.”
